Is DesignPLUS compatible with text-to-speech (TTS) readers?
Yes. The Enable Read Aloud View setting allows learners to expand hidden content in DesignPLUS elements so that it can be read aloud by text-to-speech tools.
Text-to-speech (TTS) readers are an assistive technology that converts page text to audio. They are distinct from screen readers, which narrate the entire computer interface. This means that, while screen readers detect "hidden" content in DesignPLUS elements like accordions, tabs, or popovers, TTS readers will not detect this content by default.
The Enable Read Aloud View setting, which can be toggled from the [Account Settings] page in any DesignPLUS Customizations course, adds a button to any page with DesignPLUS content, allowing learners to expand hidden content so that it can be read by TTS tools. If your institution uses a text-to-speech reader such as ReadSpeaker, it's important to enable this setting so that all page content can be read aloud.
DesignPLUS Admins can enable this setting by following these steps:
- Edit the [Account Settings] page in your customizations course.
- Open the Advanced panel of the DesignPLUS Sidebar.
- Select the Account Settings tool.
- Find the Enable Read Aloud View section.
- Check the Modify this setting checkbox.
- Check the Show a student toggle to expand hidden content for text-to-speech (ReadSpeaker) checkbox.
- Save the page.
