What are the differences between UDOIT Advantage and the Canvas Course Accessibility Checker?

UDOIT Advantage scans course content and files for accessibility issues and increases efficiency through issue grouping, across-item remediation, the ability to exclude unused content and files, and more.

The Canvas Course Accessibility Checker and UDOIT Advantage are each tools to assist users in the important process of delivering more accessible Canvas courses. Both tools are designed to detect and fix accessibility issues through a course-level interface.

Canvas Course Accessibility Checker

According to publicly available information, the Canvas Course Accessibility Checker is limited to scanning Canvas Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Announcements, and Syllabi. In the January 20, 2026 product announcement, Instructure has stated that scanning Classic and New Quizzes, course files, and course videos is not currently planned. Users can apply accessibility fixes content item-by-item through a guided process on the dashboard. The Canvas Course Accessibility Checker detects common accessibility issues, including heading structure, image alt text, and hyperlink usage, with more to follow.

A simple administrator view is available that provides a total count of open and resolved issues and a list of courses with their open and resolved issue count. Courses will show no issue count data until the course has been individually scanned by the Canvas Accessibility Checker.

UDOIT Advantage from Cidi Labs

UDOIT Advantage scans Canvas content (Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Classic Quizzes, Syllabi, and Announcements), course files, and various embedded video types to detect a wide variety of WCAG 2.2 criteria. Users are provided a detailed accessibility scorecard interface that supports multiple, tailored ways to navigate accessibility issues, including by issue type, by content type, and by impact type (e.g., visual, auditory, cognitive, motor). Notably, UDOIT can filter out unused content and files, ensuring users focus their efforts on materials that are actively used in the course.

For course content and videos, UDOIT Advantage increases efficiency through issue grouping,  across-item remediation, and the ability to apply a single fix to all identical issues in a course. UDOIT provides a guided experience for users to build accessibility understanding while they fix issues.

UDOIT also scans course files and provides options for increasing document accessibility, such as generating alternate formats, converting documents to a Canvas page, streamlining the document replacement process, and allowing students to generate alternate formats.

UDOIT Advantage features a robust administrator dashboard that includes detailed reports about the state of accessibility across accounts and subaccounts. Additionally, UDOIT Advantage users can leverage Cidiscape, a free reporting tool from Cidi Labs, that enables bulk course scanning and creation of custom course batches for tailored accessibility data and reports.
