Why do my Proctorio Settings disappear while editing a Classic Quiz with DesignPLUS?

Cidi Labs support is currently assisting the team at Proctorio as they try to resolve an ongoing issue where the Proctorio Settings cannot be edited on Classic Quizzes.

12/1/2025 Update

DesignPLUS released an attempted fix on November 26.  It appears the issue was with Windows touch screen devices.  This patch fix reverts the code that was introduced on September 4 to make DesignPLUS Fill-in-the-Blank and Sort Items elements drag-and-drop compatible on mobile.  Initial reports show that this resolves the Proctorio browser extension bug in classic quizzes.  We are seeking further confirmation and will also find a new approach for enabling drag-and-drop functionality in the app for all interactive DesignPLUS elements.

11/18/2025 Update

Our development team is currently assisting Proctorio support as they troubleshoot their browser extension.  We are trying to get a meeting scheduled to help debug the issue together. Since Cidi Labs hasn't been able to replicate the bug, we are hoping to get a call scheduled with their development team as soon as possible to help accurately identify and resolve the issue.

Explanation of the Issue

Beginning in September 2025, some users discovered an issue in Classic Quizzes where the Proctorio Settings cannot be edited.  While meeting with our customers, we've identified that in rare cases (usually on Windows 10 and 11 devices), the Proctorio browser extension fails to properly render the settings on Classic Quizzes when DesignPLUS is present.  It will either 1.) render the settings but without any text content, or 2.) not render the settings at all.

The Cidi Labs support and development teams have met with several of our customers who are experiencing this issue. We've attempted to troubleshoot the issue on calls together; however, when the browser inspector tools are enabled to understand what is happening on the back-end, the Proctorio extension gets removed.  Proctorio documentation is also not publicly available.  So we've had to get creative to try to see what the console log says and to inspect HTML on the page.  There are no errors in the log from DesignPLUS, and the HTML for the settings either renders without text or renders not at all.

Cidi Labs has also helped Proctorio by installing DesignPLUS into a sub-account on their Canvas instance in order for their team to replicate and investigate further.

Currently, we have identified that the bug only has to do with the Proctorio browser extension failing to render settings properly.  DesignPLUS works normally in all cases.  Until the cause of the issue is accurately diagnosed, Cidi Labs is unable to resolve it alone.

Workaround

If users are unable to edit the Proctorio Settings with DesignPLUS, the temporary workaround is to add ?global_includes=0 to the end of the URL while editing the Classic Quiz. This loads the quiz without the Canvas Theme JS and CSS files, preventing DesignPLUS from loading, and the browser extension works properly.

Does this issue happen in Canvas New Quizzes?

No, the issue is specific to Canvas Classic Quizzes. For more information about this, see Does DesignPLUS work with Canvas' New Quizzes?
