Student Activity is pulled directly from Students' Canvas Enrollment data. If student Activity does not appear in ObservEd, the data isn't returning from Canvas.
The Last Activity data is directly pulled from a data field in Canvas that is pulled in live. Sometimes, Canvas returns this field as null, even though there should be data. When this happens, ObservEd shows the N/A or NaN value for the user.
If this issue occurs, below are some things that can be done to make this work.
Check that Canvas Analytics are Enabled for the Institution
To check this,
- Go to the Canvas Admin Settings
- Scroll down to the features list
- Make sure the Analytics checkbox is checked

Check ObservEd Task Runner User and Permissions
The ObservEd Task Runner may need to be refreshed in the ObservEd LTI. For the steps to ensure the Task Runner is set up correctly in ObservEd, see the ObservEd Admin Guide: Task Runner.
The ObservEd Task Runner User may not have the necessary permissions enabled. To check this, a root account admin will need to check the Permissions for the ObservEd Task Runner role which was set up during installation. To check this,
- Go to the root account
- Select Permissions in the Global Navigation
- Select Account Roles
- Locate the ObservEd Task Runner, and ensure they have the following permissions enabled:
- Analytics - view pages
- Announcements - view
- Conversations - send messages to individual course members
- Course Content - view
- Courses - view list
- Discussions - view
- Grades - view all grades
- SIS Data - read
- Users - manage students in courses
- Users - view list
- Users - view login IDs
- Users - view primary email address
